![]() ![]() The open, evolving nature of OAuth 2.0 may be the very reason for its continuous acceptance and success. The extensions, introduced over a period of time, allowed for constant adaptation to the dramatic environmental changes taken place since 2012, when the framework was originally introduced. * The ever-present OAuth 2.0 implementations resemble a branch in the evolutionary tree, with the protocol extensions forming homologous structures on top of the common, open for interpretation ancestor-RFC 6749. We will also take into consideration the best current practices for building native OAuth 2.0 clients-that is, applications running on the end-user's (mobile) device. In this document, we will leverage terminology defined in OAuth 2.0 and one of its extensions: OpenID Connect. In the context of REST API protection, however, there seems to be a clear leader at the moment: the OAuth 2.0 authorization framework with extensions galore*. The task of delivering instructions to a machine should not always start with inventing a computer, defining a language, building an operating system, and so on. It is also easy to see how standards may help in software development. A railroad standard works well because there are no fundamental ongoing changes in the use case of transporting a heavy weight from point A to point B. At the same time, creativity is somewhat limited in that area, making it the technology of choice in the infamous trolley problem. It is easy to see how adopting standards makes a railroad an efficient way of transporting goods (and their consumers), because all interested parties are in agreement on direction, schedule, and the wheel gauge.
